Shortly after Netflix announced the Evangelion license deal, original Asuka voice actress Tiffany Grant published a press release and fan petition on behalf of herself and the rest of the original English dub cast, including Spike Spencer (Shinji), Amanda Winn Lee (Rei), and Allison Keith (Misato).

Whatever the case, speculation over a redub sparked commentary from the anime community well before the June 21 launch of the series - including from those involved with the late ’90s North American release. How Evangelion’s creator funneled his obsessions and depression into the legendary anime The road to Evangelion on Netflix is paved with weird bootlegs The right way to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion Polygon has reached out to Netflix for clarification on the decision to redub the series. Key roles are now voiced by Casey Mongillo (Shinji), Stephanie McKeon (Asuka), Ryan Bartley (Rei), and Keranen (Misato).Ī series of licensing snafus - complicated by legal battles between the anime studio Gainax and creator Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara, and the collapse of ADV Films, the North American distribution company behind the original dub - may have played a role in Netflix’s ultimate decision to scrap the well-known English tracks in favor of self-owned dialogue audio. The English dub was directed by Carrie Keranen and Kevin Hoffer, and written by Keranen Garcia and Oscar Garcia. Netflix provides multiple ways to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion in North America: a new subtitled version, with English, Spanish, and two Chinese sets of subs, and a redubbed version with English, Spanish, French, and German audio options. But now, the newly released episodes give the answer. Evangelion would finally be available on a major streaming platform, but would Netflix deliver the same show that global audiences embraced in the decade after its 1995 debut? Was Evangelion still Evangelion without the original subtitles, or the 1996 English translation and voice-over dub, supervised by creator Hideaki Anno himself? In the lead-up to the release, Netflix was unable to provide Polygon with a firm answer after multiple inquiries. The announcement garnered mixed reactions. That changed last November when Netflix announced that all 26 episodes of the anime series, and the films Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death (true)² and The End of Evangelion, would arrive to the service in 2019. (Incidentally, Evangelion will teach you that if there is any possible way it CAN be seen as a sexual metaphor, it IS a sexual metaphor.) Even if you end up liking the Japanese voice actors better, there are still at least a few scenes that you have to acknowledge are just incredible voice acting. For years, Neon Genesis Evangelion sat in licensing limbo, leaving English-speaking fans without a legal avenue to watch the classic anime. It's at its roughest in the first couple episodes, but get through that and the main performances only get better, climaxing with the movies. I would go so far as to recommend that any English-speaking viewer watch the dub when viewing the series for the first time.

Plus there are a few brilliant Woolseyisms that actually make the script better (and, admittedly, a few that don't). But I think that's the brilliance of it - based on the script, it interprets the characters in a slightly different way, without losing any of the incredibly intense emotion the story is trying to convey. The fact is they're very different from the Japanese performances, and for many people that makes them inferior. They are emotional, sincere, imaginitive, and fit the characters perfectly. Admittedly it's a little rough around the edges - being a mid-90s ADV production and all - but quite frankly the performances of the main cast are among the greatest in dub history. I know opinions on this dub are divided, but I have to say - this is the dub that made me a dub-watcher.
